L'atelier

Il y a évidemment l'atelier traditionnel, avec ses nombreux outils, toiles, papiers de grands formats, caisses de peintures et l'odeur de l'essence de térébenthine.
Mais mon atelier préféré est dehors, à travers le monde,
avec le chevalet de voyage, le carnet sur les genoux,
ou même sur le coin d'une nappe en papier.
Il y a aussi la salle de classe, où les pratiques graphiques
de mes étudiants sont une source d'inspiration inouïe
et perpétuelle.

Handling the tools

A part of drawing pleasure resides in the choice of tools.
With only a few basic tools, possibilities of expression and transcription or interpretation are infinite.
There is also the attachment to a specific tool regarding its efficiency, its history, and its sentimental value.
Personally, I don’t hesitate to remind students of a few obvious drawing principles, almost like fail-safe technical advice :
to play with the thickness of the strokes whatever the tool is, to use strong contrasts, to be as efficient as possible while drawing,
to choose inks according to their capacity to interact with water,
to carry around a few light and nomadic tools that can easily
be found worldwide.
